Dealing With Pain From Having Your Braces Tightened? Try These 3 Foods

Posted on: 16 October 2017

If you wear braces, you could be looking forward to the results that you will see once they are removed. However, there might be certain things that you don't like about having braces, such as the discomfort that can come from having them tightened at your regular orthodontic appointments. Of course, if you want your braces treatment to be effective, it's critical to make sure that you have your braces tightened as you are supposed to. Fortunately, there are certain foods that can help you reduce your discomfort and avoid being hungry while you are dealing with this discomfort.

1. Milkshake or Ice Cream

Even though you might try to avoid sweets for the health of your teeth, now is a good time to treat yourself to something nice and sweet. You might find that sipping on a milkshake or smoothie after your appointment will provide you with a little bit of relief from your discomfort. Plus, knowing that you are planning on treating yourself to something sweet after your appointment can help make it a little bit easier to get through. If you would prefer, ice cream in a bowl is another good option, although you will probably want to avoid eating an ice cream cone for the first couple of days after your appointment.

2. Mashed Potatoes

If you're looking for something that isn't sweet but that is still comforting after having your braces tightened, you might find that mashed potatoes are a good choice. You can choose your favorite garlic mashed potatoes or mashed potatoes with cheese, or you can enjoy it with a little bit of gravy. Just be careful about any gravy that has small pieces of shredded meat in it, since you may have to worry about these small pieces of meat getting stuck in your braces.

3. Soup

Few things can be better after having your braces tightened than a bowl of good soup. You probably will not want to eat it too hot, however, and you'll want to ensure that any added ingredients are small and soft enough that you can easily eat them without having to chew too much. This can be a good way to make sure that you are getting your nutrients after having your braces tightened rather than just eating things like ice cream and pudding.

As you can see, there are plenty of things that you can eat after having your braces tightened. If you stick to certain foods, you can alleviate some of your discomfort. Additionally, you can talk to your orthodontist about ways that you can get rid of some of your pain. For example, he or she might recommend things like taking an over-the-counter pain reliever before your appointment and the next few days after.
