Three Tips To Care For Your Braces Over The Summer
Posted on: 17 May 2021
With summer just around the corner, it means that school is almost out. For many families, this means that some kids may go to a summer or sports camp, some families are heading off on family vacations, and some families are going to relax at the beach. However, because summer is full of fun and relaxation, it is a time of forgetfulness when it comes to orthodontic and oral health. To ensure that you don't sideline your orthodontic treatment, here are a few tips to care for your braces over the summer.
Pack Responsibly
Regardless of where you are headed during these upcoming summer months, it is imperative that you are responsible during your packing and keep your braces and oral health in mind. You should make a checklist to ensure that you do not forget anything. Here are a few items that you will want to ensure that you have packed in your overnight bag:
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Orthodontic threader
- Floss
- Mouthwash
- Orthodontic wax
Maintain an Oral Health Routine
Summer means a lot of staying up late and sleeping in, which means you will not be on your regular schedule. Since you will not have a regular routine as you did during the school year, you will want to make sure that you have a regular oral health routine. You need to ensure that you are continuing to brush twice a day and floss at least once. If you end up getting into poor habits with brushing and flossing, you can bet that your orthodontic and oral health will suffer the consequences. The last thing that you want is to return from your summer with numerous oral health issues and backtracking your orthodontic treatment.
Prevent Broken Brackets
Your head may not be on the straightest during the summer since you are just thinking about having loads of fun, soaking up the sun, and getting tan. However, it is important that you be mindful of what you are eating. Therefore, avoid hard, sticky foods that could cause issues with your braces. You should also remember to wear your mouthguard if you are going to be playing any physical sports like beach volleyball. You do not want to stop in the middle of a fun day during the summer to visit your orthodontist to fix a broken bracket.
The aforementioned tips will help you enjoy your summer without having to worry about visiting the orthodontist in between all the fun. However, if something does go awry with your braces, contact your orthodontist for an appointment.
